(More customer reviews)I've had this TV for just over 24 hours and so far I'm pleased.I chose the LG 5400 after visiting the local blue and yellow store as they were changing over their 2009 models to the 2010s. I was initially impressed by the Samsung LED LCDs and was getting close to buying the Samsung 7100 (7000 everywhere else with a red ToC vs. Grey at this store) when on my third trip to the store, they had just put the LG up on the wall.The picture stood out right away from the Samsungs and the Panasonic Plasma above it.The other decidng factor over the Samsung was the matte screen on the LG.The Samsungs have a high gloss screen just like a Plasma which is a problem for the room that I planned to put the TV in.It has multiple windows and lots of light so a high gloss screen would reflect way too much.As for the Pro's and Cons, here's what I have noticed so far:

Pro's: Picture quality with deep blacks and sharp contrast, picture adjustment wizard and ability to tweak it to the Nth degree including judder, sleek case appearance, internet widgets (haven't played with these too much yet so they might just be toys to brag about but, not too useful), Solid build
Cons: missing some features that others in the price range have like local dimming LEDs, PIP/POP, room light sensing, and a universal remote, 120hz instead of 240hz (not that I've noticed a problem yet).

Lastly, a note about mounting this TV on a wall; all of the permanent hook-ups are on the back surface (i.e not recessed into the case) so if you plan to use a low profile mount, you'll need right angle adapters for everything (HDMI, Component Video, VGA, etc).You'll need at least 1.75" of clearance from the back of the TV to the wall to get all your connections made.You'll also need to use a recessed outlet.I ended up scrapping the low profile mount and using a tilting mount that gave me 2.5" of clearance.Made life alot easier at the sacrifice of some sleekness on the wall.This shouldn't have been a big surprise given how thin the TV is but, I made the mistake.Oh well.After I've lived with this TV for a while longer I'll post an update but, so far so good.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.
If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

(More customer reviews)In considering what TV to buy my parents, I had the apparent choice between buying an led LCD or a plasma. I opted to get the led, but you wouldn't really be wrong to go the other route. My parents just wanted any TV that was bigger than 50 inches while I, being somewhat of a techy, needed to find the best TV over 50 inches. Well, here you have what I would call the third best TV over 50 inches (the 8500 and 8000 models being better) at the time of this review. This is the first of Samsung's new line of lcds to come out this year, and it narrowly beats out last years 6 and 7 series TVs by offering a better contrast ratio (4,000,000-1 vs. 3,000,000-1) for virtually the same price point. Otherwise, it's pretty much identical after reviewing the specs. Newer is better though in this case also because of the firmware upgrades and other fine improvements in engineering and technology.

The TV was delivered about 5 days after I purchased it through Amazon, and it took about 15 minutes to set up. Out of the box the thing looks incredible. It's as thin as a blackberry! Some assembly was required with a phillips head and about 10 screws to attach the tv to the stand, but it was only 4 steps total and added to the suspense. After plugging in literally two cords (the hd component cables and the power cord) you are up and running. When the picture came on it was CRYSTAL clear. It puts every other TV I've seen to shame. You can go to Best Buy and do a side by side comparison and you won't find anything better. Forget about the plasma, this is the way to go. I could describe in more detail how great the picture is, but suffice to say it's flawless from movies to news to sports. Even if this is not your first HDTV, you will notice a big difference. I bought a 32" 240 mhz set in Decemeber and this tv is in another league. The LED side panel illumination works well, and there is very little adjustment of the settings necessary to achieve true to life picture quality.

"True to life" will be understood in a new way when you buy this TV. The longer it has been since your last TV purchase, the more breathtaking this advancement in technology will be. Regardless, this will be a TV that will have a useful life for years (longer than a plasma) and will always look amazing. That being said, I would get the warranty (2 years) for an extra 170 or so.

Note: I chose lcd over plasma because lcds are noiseless and don't have the risk of picture burn-in. The 58' plasma I was looking at is the same price. This TV is better than plasmas priced less at the time of the review. If price is the main concern, I might do an in store side by side comparison with cheaper plasmas to see if the difference to you is worth the money.

(More customer reviews)I've had this TV for about a month now and absolutely love it. I have a 40" Samsung 550 TV as well. A family member who lives next door has a 46" Samsung 650 series so we we're pretty familiar with the Samsungs and that is what we were looking at when purchasing this one. After looking at the prices for 52" and 55" Samsung 650 series I kept coming back to look at this one as it seemed like an incredible value compared to those. I was actually concerned because the price was significantly lower. However, I have owned Toshiba, Hitachi, and JVC TVs in the past and have been pleased with the Japanese TV companies in the past so I bought this from Amazon sight unseen. I had read a lot of reviews on the net on the Toshiba Regza models and most appeared to be positive.

The TV gets shipped via an air freight company and was delivered to my house as scheduled. I elected to not have them do anything but help get the TV in the house and unboxed and setup everything myself. Packaging was standard as was the same as the Samungs. (remove the white clips from the bottom of the box and lift the top off)

I placed it on a solid stand and did not feel the need to attach the recommended safety straps. It is solid on the pedestal and is not going anywhere with the location I have it at.

When I first powered on the TV I was very happy to see a prompt asking me if the TV was being used in a store or at home. I chose home for the obvious reason. Many manufacturers crank up the brightness and contrast to make them look better at the store. Unfortunately, this is the default out of the box experience for other manufacturers. I remember having to turn these down on the Samsungs. While this was a small thing, it was greatly appreciated. Here are my experiences with other areas of the TV:

APPEARANCE

The TV looks beautiful. A solid black border would have suited me just fine. However, this TV has a light gray gradient on the edges with a checkered pattern. From the viewing position you really do not notice it and it certainly is not a factor when watching TV but it looks like art in that regard. There is an illuminated Toshiba logo centered at the bottom of the TV. If the illumination bothers you then you can disable it in the preferences. Overall it looks a little nicer than my plain black Samsung.

PICTURE

Excellent picture. Sharp crisp detail. I played Blu-Ray discs through a Samsung 3600 player I had connected to it and they looked awesome. When I purchased this TV from Amazon I got a free Toshiba BDX2000 Blu-ray player with it and moved the 3600 to another room and used it after a couple of days. No difference in the picture between the two. I've also watched much HD programming via satellite as well as some SD material too. I hooked my Roku up and streamed SD content from it as well. Regardless of source, the TV performs beautifully. The detail is razor sharp, the colors look true, and the picture continues to impress me. I watch a LOT of movies via HD premium channels as well as Blu-Ray discs. I was really concerned about an LCD over a plasma in this regard but have not bit disappointed in this regard. My other major concern was that movies would look more video-like as opposed to movie-like. On the 46" Samsung my personal opinion is that things appear to look more video-like. On the 40" Samsung not so much so, but neither look as good as this Toshiba in my opinion. Of course sitcoms and your standard TV fare look great on the Toshiba as well. Bottom like is that I think this Toshiba looks better for movie buffs. I also noticed that the depth of field on the 40" and 46" Samsung do not seem as accurate as on this TV. Depth of field looks normal here and perspective looks accurate to me. I don't see how anyone can knock anything with the picture on this set. It has a good as anything I have seen in the stores.

GLARE

Toshiba says this TV has a "CrystalCoat high contrast screen coating". The best way I can describe the look is by comparing a laptop screen that is glossy vs. one that is matte. This TV definitely falls into the glossy category. The tradeoff between glossy vs. matte has always been glare with vivid, bright, beautiful display vs no glare and a more muted picture in that regard. No TV made is going to have zero glare. This is just part of the way light behaves in regard to reflective surfaces. I have seen complaints that this TV has too much glare. Those who feel strongly in that regard might be a candidate for a set that is more matte-like. However, what we are really talking about here is glare when dark images are displayed on the screen. For example, if you are watching a sitcom or things that are generally more lit then you aren't going to see any glare even with the windows open and the sun shining in. The difference comes when you have something like the Dark Knight playing where you have many night scenes and dark environments. In those cases, you are going to see glare from any light sources that give off any light in front of the TV. The bottom line is that glare may be worse here than on other LCD TVs. However, and this is a big however...this is also what makes this picture look a lot better in my opinion. So if you choose to go the less-glare route you are also sacrificing something picture-wise to accomplish this. It will not look and bright, vivid, and beautiful. Personally, I do not find the glare to be an issue.

BLACK LEVELS

A couple of the reviews I had read stated that the black levels on this TV were not good or accurate. This is simply not even close to true. Black levels are excellent. Black levels here are better than the Samsungs in my opinion. Toshiba states that the "DynaLight Backlight Control" automatically adjusts the backlighting to help in this regard and I believe them. To me, this looks more like a plasma in this regard that other LCD TVs. Black levels have always been an issue with LCD TVs to some degree but it looks like Toshiba has resolved that issue here. My last 50"+ TV was rear projection and I was worried that the black levels (especially in movies) might be an issue with the new LCD TV but it simply is not the case.

SOUND

First, I do not use the internal sound. I set the volume level to 0 after 5 minutes. I find it hard to fathom that someone buys a 55" TV and uses the internal speakers. At this size I would expect must people have a home theater audio setup. (I do) The few minutes I listened to it through the internal speakers, I did not notice any problems so I cannot speak to the internal audio. Bottom line, if you do not have a 5.1/7.1 setup outside of the TV, do yourself a favor and get one.

FEATURES

First, you normally do not see LCD TVs with 120Hz at this price point but you get it here. Toshiba uses the backlighting to simulate 240Hz performance but personally I haven't seen any of this motion blur in sports even on my 40" Samsung without 120Hz. I have watched HD NFL and NASCAR and just have never seen it on any of the LCD TVs I have seen. Tons of people and reviews have talked about it and I guess that where this would occur, 120Hz is going to help.

Next, another feature you do not see on sets in this price range and many that cost much more and that is the ambient light sensor which can automatically adjust the picture based on the room lighting.

Finally, this TV supports 1080p24. If you do not know what that is or why it is important then do a google search. For those of us that love movies, it is a great feature.

I won't go through all the features as you can read them in the description or by downloading the user manual. However, I have to say that this TV has more (and friendly) options in the menus and has some really cool stuff that many of the Samsungs do not. (ambient light sensor mentioned above for example). Overall this set has every feature I have seen on other TVs and more. Again, at a great value.

VALUE

I paid $1631 with free shipping and I see it is now down to $1573. Comparable Samsung TVs will set you back $500-$800 more. Personally, I found this set to exceed my expectations and feel it is better that the Samsungs. Add the price difference in it because a huge value in my opinion. Personally, I am not sure why Toshiba is currently selling at these amazing price points but I am glad I jumped onboard while they were. I assure you that if you buy a Vizio, Insignia,or Sharp LCD TV at this price point then you are getting a sub-par TV. You can spend more to get the LG, Sony, or Samsung but I don't believe the extra money is buying you a better TV. Best Buy is still selling this TV for $1999 so buy it here from Amazon.

OVERALL

There is a reason Consumer Reports rated this the #3 TV Overall and the #2 Recommended TV in the 52-inch and larger category. It is a fantastic TV and I think it is being overlooked at the moment only because Samsung and LG are doing so well at the present. If you are reluctant about the price being lower than other TVs with less features, do not be concerned. I would not hesitate to buy this TV again and would recommend it highly to others. Sony BRAVIA EX 400 Series 40-Inch LCD TV, Black Review

(More customer reviews)I have to say, I really like this TV.My previous LCD was a Samsung 32" 720p - and this set blows it away in almost every aspect.I think I paid around $550 for the Samsung a little over a year ago, so I jumped at the chance to upgrade to the EX400.

Pros:The ambient light sensor works terrific.
-4 HDMI inputs!Plug away my friends.
-Bravia Sync feature works great with my Sony home theater system.
-PS3 games have never looked better.I played Killzone 2 right after I setup the TV and my jaw was open for about 10 minutes straight.
-It only has a 60Hz refresh rate, but I've yet to see any blur while watching sports.
-DVD's look fairly crisp as well, considering I have a cheap DVD up-converter.
-It's a Sony!I'm sure some ppl have had bad experiences with Sony, but I've had nothing but luck.To each his own I guess.

Cons:The remote is junk.It looks cheap and it isn't very functional.
-The grey panel on the front.I had a bigger problem with the online picture of the set than I do in person.It doesn't look THAT bad - but it still throws off the continuity of the black perimeter.Strange call by Sony.
-Calibration is frustrating.There are so many different picture settings you'll probably struggle to find the perfect setup.I used the DVD THX Optimizer (found it on one of my Star Wars movies) and it helped a lot.(I posted them on [...])
-If you're using an antenna instead of cable/satellite you'll find that channel surfing is a bit slow.This is kind of a nitpick, but the channels take a little longer to load on this set.
-No swivel?I knew this set didn't have it before I bought it - but it would still be nice.

For around $600 you can have full 1080p AND a 40" screen.Great TV - great deal.

Toshiba 32AV502R 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV Review

(More customer reviews)So I was in the market for a 32 inch tv and found this Toshiba to be a great value. I 32 inches, having 1080P isn't necessary and worth the extra cash. I also reviewed the 37 RV525R, which is virtually the same set but with 1080P.It's got good blacks, better than everage. Excellent whites, as most LCD'S have. Handles motion very well despite not having 120 refresh rate. Does a good job with 3:2 pulldown, although you have to turn that feature on, which is the cinema mode turned to film. Viewing angle isn't too great, but then again no lcd is. Once you get 14 degrees off-axis you lose 50% of the picture's contrast. Reflections aren't too bad with this Toshiba, so it's ideal for brightly lit room. Color accuracy isn't too bad but there is a green push which the picture menu allows you to correct. The audio is also very good for a little flat panel, except you get a little vibration with certain dialog with the bass turned all the way up. The remote is excellent and is very user friendly. The menu system is very simple and easy to navigate. Overall, this is a great value. Sure, you will get a better tv with either the Samsung or the Sony, but you will pay more for the extra features they come with. Are they worth it to you? It does, however, outperform the LG,Sharp, and the Panny in most areas. At the price you can grab this for it's hard to turn down. Here are calibrated settings for this tv.

(More customer reviews)I was looking for a LCD ceiling mount so my computer screen could be situated close to my elliptical trainer.Yes, I enjoy working out and working at the same time - call me crazy.At any rate, I wanted to be able to rotate the monitor out of the way so I could watch the TV.The Peerless ceiling mount stated that it could rotate so I purchased the mount from Amazon.I received the package in short order (perhaps 2 days from my order date) in a nice neat package.All was well with the entire process except for the fact that the mount does not rotate.It can be mounted in any direction but once it is mounted it remains fixed except for a 30 degree swivel.Is the swivel sufficient? Not for my needs but I have no intention of returning the mount since it is already installed and working well enough.Would I purchase this one again?No.I really wanted one that rotated 360 degrees.Perhaps I will add a swivel mount to the base to allow it to rotate but for now I will make do with the limited swivel arc.

If you have no interest in rotation, I would highly recommend this mount.It is made from top quality metal and is a snap to install.I spent less than 20 minutes putting it together and screwing it into my exposed ceiling joists where I workout.Peerless is just that - peerless.
